ABOUT THE CARD SHELL GAMES VOLUME #1.
Code and Artwork (c)1992 Ralph S Sutherland.
Portions of code remain (c) Symantec Corp.
Welcome to the first of a series of solitaire card game releases. Volume
#1 is the first four games to be developed with a new card game framework
called the Card Shell. They all use full colour graphics including 40
pack designs and 60 background patterns.
This 1993 release fixes a few minor bugs.
*****System requirements
The games are designed to work best under system 7.0 or newer, although
they will still function with some loss of smoothness under system
6.0.7. The games use full 256 colour colour graphics, but they
have optimisations to work well under all depths from B&W to
32bit colour. However they require a mac with colour quickdraw.
At the moment this includes:
all Mac II computers (including the SE/30), all LCs, all Quadras
all powerbooks (except the PB100) and probably all newer macs.
(I am not sure about the Classic II).
They each want about 1MB of ram under system 7.0 and up to 1.5-2MB under
system 6 without 32bit Quickdraw

ABOUT THE CARD SHELL GAMES VOLUME #2
Code and Artwork (c)1992 Ralph S Sutherland.
Portions of code remain (c) Symantec Corp.
Welcome to a series of solitaire card game releases. This is the second
release of three games, developed with a new card game framework called the
Card Shell. They all use full colour graphics including 40 pack designs
and 60 background patterns.
Volume #2 consists of some more difficult games. 'The Towers' is based
on 'SeaHaven Towers', the best computer solitaire game ever. 'The Smith'
is a version of Spider, and 'The Prince' is just very difficult.
Examples of sucessful games are included so you can see how it is done.
I had to get my testers to do 'The Smith', I couldn't....
**************************************************************************
IMPORTANT: You do not require Volume #1 to use Volume #2, but if you
already have Volume #1 then you only require one copy of the 'cards' data
file. It can be shared by all of the Card Shell games. You can simply
remove the copy that comes with volume #1 and use the Volume #2 'cards'
file for all the games. This will save about 350K of disk space.

Subject: [*] Monitor - System 7 Monitoring Tool
Monitor 1.5-1
Copyright 1991-1993 Mark Alldritt
All Rights Reserved
Monitor is a utility for the Macintosh which allows you to see the level of
activity taking place within your computer. Monitor presents a number of
different types of information including CPU utilization, memory usage and
disk space availability. Much of the information presented by Monitor is
displayed using simple graphs.
Monitor relies heavily on facilities of the Macintosh System 7 operating
system to gather data about your Macintosh. As a result, Monitor will not
work with versions of the Macintosh operating system prior to System 7.
Changes for version 1.5-1:
- Corrected a bug which caused Monitor to hang in rare circumstances
- Removed redundant code - reduced partition size from 80 to 75K.
Changes for version 1.5:
- Added a Memory window which presents a summary of memory usage. This
window
displays memory usage information for the system as a whole and for each
running application. The Memory window is similar to the Finder's "About
This Macintosh" window.
- Added new sorting options to the Volume Order menu.
- Changed menu highlighting for the Show Volumes and Show Applications
menu items to make them conform more to the interface guidelines.
- Corrected a window redraw problem which caused the bars in the
Applications
window to break up when foreground applications changed the color
palette.
- Corrected a rare problem which caused volume name changes and volume
dismounts not to be reflected properly in the Volumes window.
- Added a limits check when adjusting window positions to avoid a problem
where window title bars could move up under the menu bar when Resize
Upwards is selected.
- Made Monitor sensitive to changes in the size of the desktop when
positioning
windows at startup time.
- Corrected a problem where desk accessories were not sorted properly in
the Applications window.
- Changed the way Pause operates. It now pauses immediately as opposed to
taking one more sample. Also, windows are inverted while Monitor is
paused.
Monitor is freeware. See Read Me file for conditions.
Thank you to all those that responded to Monitor 1.4 & 1.5 with words of
encouragement, suggestions and problem reports. I've tried to address all
the problems and many of the suggestions I've received. I apologize to
those
who reported problems or made suggestions I have not yet addressed.

Monitor Switch is an application for the Macintosh which allows you to
switch resolutions on your multisync monitor without the hassle of changing
the cable that is connected to the built-in video. It is similar to
DPI-on-the-fly and Radius Resolutions, but it is more compatible with other
software (it is an application rather than an INIT/CDEV and it doesn't
patch any traps).
Monitor Switch currently works on the Centris and Quadra families of
computers. It should work on any future Macintoshes with similar built-in
video hardware.

Subject: [*] ViewIt 2.07 Shareware (replaces version 2.06 in Development)
ViewIt 2.05 -> 2.07 Improvements
-- new "Tutorial" program to help beginners
-- support for switching applications when modal windows are open
-- support for editing all resource types without quitting program
-- new debugging features added to main help window
-- new "Links" dialog showing all data links in a window
-- enhanced support for CDEF-based dial controls
-- more "3D" control examples
About ViewIt Shareware Version 2.07
A shareware version of ViewIt(TM) is being made available to the Macintosh
programming community as a way of introducing ViewIt and other programming
modules from FaceWare. ViewIt is one of the best Mac programming tools
available for creating powerful windows containing many views and custom
controls. In addition to ViewIt, this package includes a complete list and
description of other, non-shareware FaceWare modules that support advanced
custom controls, animation, communications, database management, QuickDraw(TM)
extensions, and 2D and 3D plotting. FaceWare modules are reasonably priced,
do not require license fees, are compatible with all major languages and
compilers, and are called using a simple C function, Pascal procedure, or
Fortran subroutine (a HyperCard(R) interface is also available).
ViewIt consists of a powerful set of programming modules that help programmers
manage menus, windows, and other elements of the Macintosh interface in new or
existing programs. ViewIt is uniquely designed to be much easier to use than
other "interface builders" by requiring a minimal amount of program code (as
little as 3 lines!), and supporting the on-line editing of windows from within
running programs (like HyperCard). The combination of ViewIt plus Apple's
ResEdit(TM) can be used in place of tools such as MacApp(R) and AppMaker(TM),
or as an enhancement of such tools. When you decide to purchase ViewIt, the
price is just $95.
ViewIt's major window-related features include:
-- support for editing modal and modeless windows from within running programs
-- multiple fonts, styles, and colors (w/o the limitations of standard ictb
resources)
-- a variety of useful custom controls (lists, menus, ICON/PICT buttons, etc.)
-- support for extended controls that can be as powerful as complete graphic
and text editors
-- a view hierarchy that supports scrolling and paging of groups of controls
-- direct links between program variables and control values
-- ability to override all control behavior
-- compatibility with existing CDEFs
-- imports existing dialog DITL resources
-- support for System 7 Balloon Help
The ViewIt package also includes a module that can be used to support standard
items in the main menu bar, tear-off menus, floating palettes, and the
required Apple events.
The complete text of an objective, professional review of ViewIt that appeared
in the Nov/Dec 92 issue of MacTutor is included in the ViewIt demo program,
along with comments from a wide range of programmers who are currently using
ViewIt.

Yup, Kevin, it works! I entered "bishop AND hat" (singular) into the Deluxe
version's Word Hunter and got:
miter (mh2tr) n.
1. Ecclesiastical. The liturgical headdress and part of the insignia of a
Christian bishop. In the Western church it is a tall pointed hat with peaks
in front and back, worn at all solemn functions.
2.a. A thong for binding the hair, worn by women in ancient Greece. b. The
ceremonial headdress worn by ancient Jewish high priests.
3.a. A miter joint. b. The edge of a piece of material that has been beveled
preparatory to making a miter joint. c. A miter square.
miter v. mitered, mitering, miters.
tr.
1. To bestow a miter upon.
2.a. To make (two pieces or surfaces) join with a miter joint. b. To bevel
the edges of for joining with a miter joint.
intr.
To meet in a miter joint. [Middle English mitre, from Old French, from
Medieval
Latin, from Latin mitra, headdress of the Jewish high priest, from Greek.]
Hope this helps!

Subject: American Heritage Dictionary - Word Hunter
When using the word hunter on the dictionary, or any other keyword bolean
search, use a truncation or blank character. In this case you would type
"bishop? AND hat" and your search would find all words with "bishop" as
the first six letters. You have to be reasonable with your truncations,
as you can imagine you would not want to use something like "th?" as a
truncation. One last item is that I have the new version. I don't know
if the older versions handle truncation but I would think that they do
because they are an essential part of all database searches.

Subject: A New Jon Pugh
Well, call me 20% of the workforce and lay me off. You guessed it, I'm
toast and sporting a new user id at prestigous netcom. I'll tell you,
facing life without net access is a lot scarier than looking for work.
Today was D-day and 2500 Apple employees found themselves suddenly on the
street. At least it wasn't as harsh as a quick escort to the door, but
it certainly wasn't a lazy process. I did get time for a last game of
Bolo to say goodbye to everyone, but it was only a couple of hours before
I was hitting the pavement with my personal effects. The network computers
are all down so that we can't login, as is Remote Access, and Applelink
accounts are being deleted as I type. They are wasting no time. There
were also some seriously burly unarmed rental cops hanging around, but I
saw no instances of trouble. There were a lot of spontaneous going away
parties at the nearby restaurants though.

Subject: Apple MacTCP status 7/17
Judging from the volume of mail I have been receiving, many people have
read my recent postings. This is a brief note to reiterate where we are
and what's coming in the future.
MacTCP 2.0 shipped on ETO #11. Subsequently, we found and fixed problems
(mostly related to SNMP) and created MacTCP 2.0.2. MacTCP 2.0.2 will be
shipped on ETO #12. It is also bundled in the "TCP/IP Connection for
Macintosh" product which you can get through Apple retailers." New site
licensing prices for this product have been announced (but I'm just a
developer so don't ask me...). I hope that all of your price concerns
have been effectively addressed - but if not, please continue to email your
cards & letters campaigning for changes because it is works.
We know that there are performance problems using MacTCP over serial lines.
Judging from Beta test feedback, we had believed that these problems were
solved in MacTCP 2.0. While MacTCP 2.0 alters performance in a few cases,
it is clear it did not fix the problem. Recent (unsponsored, but
appreciated) patches on the net have helped some of you work around the
situation. I am currently working on a fixed version of MacTCP to resolve
the issue. The distribution mechanism has not been determined, but we will
not charge for the update.
Most of the development team's time is focused on moving forward on MacTCP
3.0. This will be a new implementation of MacTCP which runs in a STREAMS
environment, is native for both 68K and PowerPC Macs, supports XTI and
sockets interfaces, retains backward compatibility with the PBControl
interface (on 68K only), provides full IP multicast support, has an
improved Domain Name Resolver, allows multihoming, and a few other
surprises. We expect to provide a developer release of this software
later this year, followed by a general release of the product in the first
half of 1994.
The (direct) contacts for MacTCP are Alistair Woodman
(woodman1@applelink.apple.com) and myself (jeo@apple.com). Alistair does
the marketing, I lead the development team. We appreciate your mail, but
please be understanding if responses take awhile. Alistair is on vacation
for another month, and I have been receiving quite a flood of mail since
"going public."

Subject: AppleTalk Problem, Missing Devices
We have a very large (many zone) AppleTalk network, and our particular
ethernet cable is one such zone. We have this connected to our LocalTalk
cable where our printers live with two routers, a FastPathIV (the latest
FastPath IV roms, but not upgraded to a FP V), and a Novell Netware
3.11 router with AppleTalk modules. The FastPath is set up as a seed
router and the Novell Netware router I am not sure about. Anyway,
at times people on the ethernet can not see ANY of the devices in
the LocalTalk zone. I should mention that there is a bridge in the
ethernet and a TurboStar repeater in the LocalTalk system, I don't know
whether the repeater slows down the local talk but I know the ethernet
loses a factor of two in speed going across the bridge. Anyway, during
periods of normal use (not heavy use) at times the printers can not
be seen from the ethernet side and at times they can. Additionally,
sometimes the Chooser forgets which printer you are using when you
select LaserWriter 8.0 and remains with the Ethernet zone selected,
even when the Chooser actually is showing the LocalTalk zone and when
you select it your printer usually shows up. This is all with System
7.1, Network 3.0.1, AppleTalk 58.0.2. When the network is very lightly
loaded the problems seem to go away. CAN ANYONE MAKE ANY SENSE OUT OF
THIS? Are there problems with having two routers (we were told that this
should be OK and thought it would give us more redundancy and throughput)?
We want to keep both routers because the FastPath routes TCP/IP and
the Novell routes IPX. Thanks, Bruce Goldstein

Liu <C526142@MIZZOU1.missouri.edu> apparently wants to back up stuff
onto a floptical drive, which is apparently not recognized by Norton
and CP as a floppy (ejectable) drive...
Don't laugh until you've thought about it----have you considered using
Compact Pro to back up your material instead? Compact Pro is quite
adept at knowing what is or is not ejectable, and in my experience
about half of the programs think of the floptical as a floppy even
though the other half think of it as a hard drive. Go figure, mm?
The System 6 finder knows it as a floppy (can Eject using snowflake-
E) and dialogue boxes such as Open and Save As and Save have a live
Eject button handy. I'd be surprised if Compact Pro didn't ask you
"where else" to put the rest of whatever you are compressing, and
the finder will probably let you eject and replace the floptical disk.
Since Compact Pro is less determined that you stay with the same medium
than are the specific Back-up programs, it probably won't mind even
if it does think you've skwunched half of a hard drive onto a hard
drive and then want to put the rest of it somewhere else.

Subject: Built in ethernet - (Q)
Dear Netters,
A dealer says that he carries Macintoshes with built in ethernet.
Does this mean I could have direct access to a faster than standard modem
(14,400 BAUD) international network the moment I purchased my machine? Or do
I have to pay additional fees to wire the outside of my house to the nearest
fiberoptic cables? Is this something that would give me direct access to
internet, or internet e-mail or, internet FTP? Or are these all additional
charges to the purchase price of the built in ethernet Macintosh? How can I
find out if I already have the outside cables to hook up to an ethernet
board?
Who would install the cables if I don't?
The only thing I know about ethernet is that it is superfast compared to
modems, because of fiberoptics. In a sense I have been taking it for granted
the speeds I see when I log into the VAX/VMS system the university I go to,
and wondering what cost does it take to get such speeds directly to my Mac LC
to the internet links?
WHen I saw Centris machines being sold with built in for a $1000 more than non
ethernet Centris machines I wondered what this would mean if I had such a
machine in the future?
Just some curious questions:-)

If this is the major disadvantage then bring on the cripple drive. It
would be extremely simple for apple (or the user) to associate a sound
with the disk-eject request dialog.
In my opinion, the major disadvantage to the cripple drive is that it makes
the interface a little less "clean". Still perfectly alright, though.
But hey, Apples stock dropped 7 5/8 (30%) yesterday so I'd suggest
bringing on the inexpensive TEAC drives as soon as possible. This current
profit amargin is killing 'em.

Quicktime 1.6, from what I understand, does a nifty thing with Apple's CD-300
CD-ROM drive. Using most any Quicktime app, you can import a digital audio
file (track) from an audio CD. Very cool, and something I'm interested in.
I'm wondering if anyone has tried this with other CD-ROM drives than can
access audio tracks, especially the Toshiba XM-3401 which seems very popular.
I don't imagine Apple put code into Quicktime for drives other than their
own.
Has anyone written a utility/hack to accomplish some type of importing of a CD
audio track on the 3401?

Well, Gee...! Ask a question around here and you'll know right away if you're
out of date! About that INIT: thanks for all your responses; here's a quick
rundown of what you said is available.
--MacSnoop, which will warn you if you insert a PC disk
--Insignia AccessPC: It allows you to mount PC disks and work with them like
they were Mac disks, to assign applications to specified file types, and other
neat features. It even knows how to store mac files on them (I think resource
forks are put into a folder). So you can save your Lotus 1-2-3 files directly
onto a DOS disk. The best solution if you already have SoftPC as the two work
together.
--DataViz MacLinkPlusPC. It is the greatest bargain for connecting PCs and
Macintoshes via disk, via direct serial cable (circular din port on Mac side),
and via Modem. Built in to the current version is a free copy of Apple's
PCExchange, Apple's EasyOpen (an INIT to automatically find the closest file
type on your Mac to both IBM and Mac files on any disk), and 700+ graphics,
spreadsheet, database, word processing translations that work through the
above
hardware/software.
--DosMounter works on more Dos disks than PCExchange.
And some price info:
Dayna's DosMounter $99.95 (list price from Dayna).
Apple's PCExchange $70 Mail order prices (rounded)
Insignia AccessPC $70 Mail order prices (rounded)

$450 per machine. They really want used equip to keep costs down.
Right now, we are looking at getting them Mac Pluses with 1MB RAM (we will

Actually, as it's been explained to me, four keys on a keyboard are
connected in some sort of matrix. When you type several keys from
the same matrix too quickly, the keyboard can get confused and will
sometimes send a code belonging to another key in the matrix. I see
this all the time with "out" becoming "ou;" as well, and I also have
trouble with "most" and a few other words. This is apparently a problem
in all keyboards, although individual keyboard design may ameliorate
the problem some, and only fast typists will see the problem anyway,
and only on specific words. Perhaps someone who knows how keyboards
are set up internally can clarify what I'm saying here...

You're right when you say that it is one of the things that MS haven't got
to yet with the Mac version. I needed this feature about three years ago
when I did my thesis. I had been using a PC up to then, and DOS Word
(before WinWord) had cross-referencing several years before that. When I
switched to the Mac, I swore a blue streak when I found out that Mac Word
did not have that feature. When I talked to MS, it wasn't a high priority,
either. Another feature that the PC Word's have is automatic numbering of
user specified lists, such as table and figure numbering. You could then
compile a list of figures and tables in a similar fashion to the way table
of contents are compiled.
Anyways, the workaround. Insert an automatic page number on the page you
want to refer to. Copy the page number to the clipboard, and format it as
hidden text (or format then copy). Then go to the place you want the
cross-reference, and choose "Paste Special" from the "Edit" menu. Choose
"Picture" format, and then the "Paste Link" button. When you print, make
sure "Print hidden text" is off.
You could also try something like Word-Ref, which uses mail merge to insert
numbers and so on into the text. You can do figure numbers,
cross-references, and so on, but you have to use another program to
"post-process" your Word file.
Hope this helps.

Word for Windows offers one facility. If you have WfW 2.0 or higher, then you
can build a pair of .DAT files, place them into your MSWORD directory, and
have
Macintosh and Windows fonts automatically converted whenever the document is
converted. They are called "Custom Font Conversions", and are documented
in a .DOC file that got installed with WfW 2.0 (CONVINFO.DOC). What you do
is to edit two files (MW5_RTF.TXT and RTF_MW5.TXT which were also installed
in your MSWORD directory when you got WfW 2.0), and save the edited
remains as xxx.DAT. When you tell WfW to open a Word for Macintosh file,
or tell it to "Save as" a WfM file, it will ask you if you want to use the
custom font converter. Say yes. Use MW5_RTF on Open and RTF_MW5 on SaveAs.
Reply to me personally if you'd like a copy of the files that I use - they
are simple text files, but too long to include here. I use them all the
time, and have found them very useful.

Subject: StuffIt! Expander 3.02 (C)
I know it seems churlish to complain about a piece of freeware, provided as
a public service, but I have noticed the following problems with StuffIt!
Expander 3.02 (compared with 3.0.1):
1) If Fetch 2.1 is set to call StuffIt! Expander to decompress files, the
Expander does not quit once it has decompressed the file. It also only
seems to operate on the first file in a downloading session. This does not
happen with StuffIt! Expander 3.0.1.
2) When dragging-and-dropping a group of files on to the Expander, the
first time it encounters a situation where the expansion process will
create a duplicate file name, it warns you and asks if you want to cancel,
but the next time it hits that situation, it carries out the expansion
anyway, adding a suffix `.1' to the filename. I don't know if this happened
with StuffIt! Expander 3.0.1.
As a result of the above, I have reverted to using StuffIt! Expander 3.0.1.
Has anyone else experienced these problems?

Every once in a rare while, I load Insignia Solutions' Entry-level

I Saved As WP5.1 from my Mac wordprocessor is going to look okay, esp.
tab-and-pagination-wise, in the PeeCee environment) or to use the MSDOS
version of BinHex.
Problem--it seems that the copy I put on my hard disk is good for one
stable use, and then develops an interesting Mac-hating habit: it won't
let me Quit. The screen and keyboard freezes (the mouse, interestingly
enough, still works fine, but can't access any menus) and I have to turn
off the machine without shutting down first and then reboot. So I go to
the program disk and recopy the SoftPC program back onto the hard drive;
take it for a test run. Run a PeeCee program. Quit. Fine. But next
time, it crashes again. Except it's not really a full crash of the Mac,
(since mouse is alive), just of the program itself, which would rather
croak than quit. Incidentally, the program will run again after display-
ing this behavior, although it will exhibit this Quitlessness forever
after unless I recopy from the program disk.
I've heard of INIT crashes that interfere with programs always or inter-
mittently, but always and only after one solitary trouble-free run? What
is this behavior? Anyone seen anything of the sort?

Subject: Using Time in Excel 4.0...
Ok all you lovers of Micro$oft, help me out of this one:
It seems that NO MATTER WHAT I do, if I have a colon (:) in a cell with
numbers, XL assumes it's a "time" if the number is less than 24 (e.g., 14:30
is assumed to be 2:30 in the afternoon on Jan 1, 1904 REGARDLESS of what you
use to display the number in the Format menu using Number..., whereas 25:00 is
assumed to be text and there's NO changing it to ANYTHING else [at least as
far as I can tell]).
Now it turns out that this is MOST inconvenient for me. I'm trying to make a
time card in XL and I have thus far found it easiest to convert all Hours:
minutes into minutes to do the math, since I have to add up the total number
of hours:minutes worked each week and this number is way over 24 (since I work
more than 3 8-hour days a week ;-).
The only solution I've found is to take the total number of minutes in a week,
calculate how many hours and minutes it is and concatinate the two numbers
with a colon in between and let it be text.
The obvious question is:
is it possible to use a format where you can have hours > 24 (e.g., hhh:mm or
36:25 which is 1 day 12 hours and 25 minutes but calculated in
hours:minutes)??
I don't enjoy having to resort to text, but if that's the only solution...
MUCH thanks in advance for anyone who can help...

Hello Netters:
See if anyone can figure this one out:
MacIIci 12Mb RAM running 7.01 & Tuner. No apparent problems. Ran Norton &
fixed
some minor dates, inited bits, etc. About a week ago, I tried to remove some
sounds from the system file. DLOGs indicating the move was taking place, but
when it was done, BEEP and it tells me that it could not complete the opera-
tion because there was not enough memory and that I should try closing some
windows and maybe picking up my room. Did both, but to no avail. I KNOW i
have
enough RAM...Strangely enough (as if it wasn't weird enough that IT knew my
room was a mess) the icon of the copied (or moved, tried both) file was
visible
at the target location. Double clicking this icon would result in a DLOG
stating that the file could not be found. Well, if YOU don't know where it
is (I was talking to my mac)...And I left it at that. So my friend wouldn't
get a copy of a cool body sound I made...
THEN... This week, I'm installing FWB (I wonder what that means?) CDT remote,
a prog to play AudioCD's on my spiffy (inexpensive, not cheap) new $299 CD
player from MacWarehouse (Has an NEC 55 or 58 mechanism 400ms access)
well, ok, maybe its cheap, but so am I!! AND (get to it already) AND I
couldn't
remove a file from the suitcase I was gonna instal the CDT remote into.
I guess this would be a good chance to say that I use SuitcaseII 1.2.12
(all right, so I'm pushing it, but I said I was cheap (FYI Suitcase is now
running v.2.x.x or something)). So I just keep getting an error of -192
which is something like resource not found (what does that mean, I dunno)
I do a couple of restarts (always do an odd number of restarts to ward off the
evil eye) and presto! the file I wanted to off is 86'ed.
What does this all mean? I dunno
What do I know? I dunno
If you know the answers to my queries, lemme know.

A temporary solution is to run with the cache turned off. It worked for

If you want a permanent fix, call Microsoft at 1-800-426-9400 and ask

My Powerbook 170 has a problem. When I either type hard on the
keyboard or move the screen or drop something on the table on which
the computer sits, then the system crashes. This happens regardless
of the software in use. The error message is always
"The application 'unknown' has unexpectedly quit because an error
of type x has occurred", where x is usually 3 or 25. On other
occasions, while WORD was in use, a bomb appeared with the message
"Sorry a system error occurred-- Microsoft Word Bus Error".
After any one of these messages, the computer has to be restarted
with the power button. A call to a Macintosh service repairperson
resulted in him saying that I should re-install System 7 or WORD.
This is a software solution to what I think is a hardware problem.
Before spending any money, I would be grateful if someone might
be able to give me more advice about my problem. For instance,
if Powerbooks are notoriously sensitive to the kinds of things I
described, it is probably not worth spending any money on repairs
which might not solve anything. The manual hasn't provided much
help except in saying that one shouldn't bump, jar, or move
the computer while the hard disk is in use. However, in my
opinion the forces involved aren't that severe.
I should point out that I am running System 7.0.1 with an 80 Mbyte
hard disk and 6 Mbytes of RAM. Thanks in advance for your help.

Well, I got my SW II up and running fine and just recently learned
that when an ink jet runs out of ink, it just stops i.e. no loss of print
quiality.
My question/peeve is that background printing on my C610 doesn't
really seem to be background printing. What it (printmonitor) seems to do
is to write the file to my hard drive and then feed the file as the printer
needs it. The thing is, whenever printmonitor sends something to the SW II
it freezes up my computer: what I type doesn't show up on the screen, clicking
the mouse on something doesn't do anything. This problem is most noticable
in between pages.
Can people suggest solutions or alternatives (shareware or commercial)
that might make background printing less painless? As is, I find it crippling
and don't even try to accomplish anything when I'm printing.
Thanks a bunch,
